Size

There are 4 main African violet sizes

What is the diameter of the rosette?

Miniatures

6 - 15 cm in diameter

Semi-miniatures

15 - 20 cm in diameter

Standards

20 - 40 cm in diameter

Large

> 40 cm in diameter

The most common African violet size is the standard, which is from 20 to 40 cm large in diameter. But its smaller “sisters” are becoming more and more popular. The smallest violets are called “miniatures” – from 6 to 15 cm, and “semi-miniatures” – from 15 to 20 cm in diameter.

However, there is also another unofficial category, the “micro-miniatures” which are so small that their rosette does not exceed 6 cm, and their leaves can be as short as 0,6 – 1,3 cm long.
The biggest violets are called “large”, and the diameter of their rosette is more than 40 cm large.

How long can the leaves grow?

Micro-miniatures

0,6 - 1,3 cm

Miniatures

1,3 - 2,5 cm

Semi-miniatures

2,5 - 3,8 cm

Standards

3,8 - 5 cm

Large

5 - 15 cm

However, even if the description of your cultivar indicates certain size, your violets might grow larger or smaller than is defined by their category. It depends on many factors and the conditions in which you grow them. So even if your “standard” violet is smaller than 20 cm, it doesn’t make it a miniature.

African violet trailer

African violet trailers

A trailer is a type of African violet which creates more than one crown on the same plant.

But these crowns are not considered suckers. So if your violet that genetically should have only one crown has been allowed to sucker, it cannot be considered a trailer.

They originated in the species. Most of them are of a miniature or semi-miniature size, so the standard size trailers are quite rare. The size is defined based on the length of the leaves, so the diameter of this type of violet can grow quite large.

Miniature

1,3 – 2,5 cm

Semi-miniature

2,5 – 3,8 cm

Standard

3,8 – 5 cm

Trailer violets require the same conditions as other African violets.
